Default What do you guys use to remove scratches on Stainless brushed finish?

Hey everyone,

My Tungsten wedding ring scratched the trigger guard of my Model 64.

I am wondering what I should use to take the scratches out? I want to keep it brushed, I do not like shiny revolvers.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I find the grey Scotch Brite best matches the factory S&W brushed finish. But depending on your finish, the green (more coarse) may work for you.

Whatever you do, try it first in a place that doesn't show.

How hard and in what direction do you rub? Circular motion, vertical, horizontal?

You may be able to see a grain to the metal so to speak. As for pressure, lightly should be adequate.

As jepp2 mentioned pull the grips and do a little practice run.

Read it all, including the links therein. Norton pads -- green, maroon, gray and white, from most abrasive to least -- are excellent.

How to polish stainless WITHOUT losing matte finish?

Grey ultra fine 3M pads and a light oil.

Circular - NO NO NO

Think of it like wood working. Look for the light scratches left by the factory finishing and go in the same direction. They may curve somewhat. Follow the direction and line. Think of it like grain in the wood. You never, I repeat never go cross grain when sanding wood.

You may find this helpful:

Scotch Brite Pad

Knowing the 3M number makes sure you get the correct pads.

It's stainless; why do you think it would be prone to rust on that spot?
