686 Rear Sight Leaf Question
My 686 no dash sight leaf broke while shooting at the range with my son. I ordered what I thought would be the correct replacement from Brownell and it does not work.
I have a 6" barrel. The sight assembly I ordered has a rounded front on the leaf and my old one was square. The big problem is the screw hole that retains the sight to the barrel does not line up when the rear of the sight is butted up to the shoulder on the barrel.
Where do I get a replacement and what part number do I order? I really only need the leaf but I'll buy the whole assembly if I have to. Or can the old one be repaired (doubtful).
Thanks for your help,

You got a New Style rear sight, you need an Old Style rear sight.
Make sure you specify that you need a Old Style sight for a 686 no dash, 6" barrel.
You may have to buy just the leaf and transfer the parts over. To do that, you'd need to also buy a new sight blade KIT that includes a new sight blade, windage screw, and nut.
Call S&W and ask if they can supply a sight.
If not, call here:

686 Rear blade
My 686 no dash had a banged up rear blade & I ordered the blade kit I needed from S&W in Oct-12 & didn't receive it until Feb-13. There are several (4?) different size blade heights for them & you might want to accurately measure the old one just to make sure you get the right kit. It was about $17 including shipping. It just took toooo long to get here.
(All modern (i.e. postwar) K/L/N frame sight assemblies use the same basic blades. S&W offers 0.126", 0.146", 0.160", and 0.196" blades with and without white outlines.)

Your 686 uses a .146" sight blade. Just get a kit and you can use the original rear sight assembly. Be careful when installing the new blade and read the directions carefully. Also watch that you don't lose the tiny spring or metal nub that fits into the sight blade adjusting screw.

S&W referred me to Guns and Gun Parts in Mass. They had a takeoff that he's selling me. Apparently, no one is making those any more. Be very careful if you have one of these older, longer sight leafs. I have no idea why this one broke.

I did hear the old style complete rear sight assembly wasn't available any more but the blade kit itself should be as it fits even the new sights.
Oops, I just re-read this & see you did say the "leaf" broke. (Don't know why I thought "blade". )
That is weird that part broke. Sorry.

I misread his post also. I have on occasion called the blade a leaf though.
