Default Jay Scott grips?

Picked these up yesterday also. Did a little research last night and believe them to be Jay Scott grips. I put them in my 586 and they felt great shooting some plinking .38s.

They could be Jay Scott or older Herrett's grips. I have sets of both brands. You can make them look as good as they feel. Strip the cheap original lacquer with acetone and refinish with Tru-Oil or my favorite Formby's low gloss "tung oil". The grips will look like they cost hundreds.

That is a good idea. I may try that. What are the differences betweeen the Tru-oil and the tung oil? One any easier to use than the other? Where does one find acetone? Hardware/lumber yard? Thanks! Jim

ja I sent you a PM.

I re-contoured and then Formby's Tung Oil finished this set of 1960's era Herrett's grips shown on a Colt Official Police .22.

The round butt combat stocks on this 66-4 were stripped and redone with Tru-Oil to give them the factory ultra gloss.

I have found this thread to be very useful to someone just getting started in refinishing grips. link

Be aware that Formby's Tung Oil contains almost no Tung Oil. There is a huge difference between pure tung oil and tung oil finish. I'm not suggesting you not use the Formby's, just adding clarification.

How shiny you want your finish to be will dictate what you use, how many coats you put on, and how you sand the surface.

Not Jay Scott; probably Herrett.
