Default 41 OR 44 DREAM????

I got a wild idea kicking around in my head.
I was looking at the L- frame 586 and was wondering with all that steel on that cylinder.
Why couldn't someone recut the chambers to 41 or 44 cal.?
Maybe rebore the barrel or if an N- frame barrel would fit just go with another barrel.
Now this is where you all come in telling me I'm nuts (which the wife reminds me of everyday) and why it would not work.

It has already been done, sort of. The S&W Model 696 is a 5 shot .44 Special on the L-Frame. This leaves the barrel shank quite thin and not strong enough for a .44 Magnum. Production lasted only a couple of years or so.

You will not get a full length magnum case in an L frame. You can get a 44 Spl 696 as mentioned above, or the wildcat .41 Special is a natural for the frame size. Finally, you may still be able to find a 'smith who would build you a 10mm 686. Clements used to offer such a conversion, but only offers it on Ruger GP100s anymore.
