Can a model 17 be converted to single action?
Does anyone know the details of what is required to convert a model 17 to single action.
Thanks,
Frank

It already is Single Action. If you mean single action ONLY, yes it can be done, but I see no real purpose in doing so. If single action is what you want, then just cock the hammer before firing it. This way you have the OPTION of shooting either way.
You could always remove the DA sear, but again I see no purpose in doing so.

Do you mean single action ONLY? To do that remove the sear (and its' spring) from the hammer.

I wouldn't change anything. If you start shooting double action, your all set to go. DA is about the only way I shoot anymore, our club has a DA only 8 week match every year. It's the hardest way to shoot and it feels good when it's mastered. Larry

Correct...there is (or used to be, who can keep up with crazy CA laws?) a rule that "single action" revolvers were exempt from the 50 year old or less ban on importation into the state. Therefore, an SAO gun (like a model 17 that cannot be fired DA) could be bought by a CA resident. There are several senior Forum members in CA that will chime in shortly.

I found an earlier thread that describes the process in detail.
Single action only is what I am looking for.
Thanks

With your finger off the trigger, thumb the hammer until it clicks and sticks.
If you can't pull it back until it contacts the frame, check the mainspring tension screw. If it is backed out enough, the mainspring develops an S-shaped curve, and binds before the hammer reaches the SA notch.
If you still can't cock the hammer, the sear or hammer notch may be damaged. That's a job for Mr. Goodwrench.
