Default Caliber conversion: Will non-pinned barrel fit pinned frame?

I've been inspired by some of the discussions of people trying to build K-frame .32s, and have decided to try it myself and make a K-frame .32 H&R Magnum. I have found an old Model 15-3 and just need to find a cylinder and barrel, and then refinish.

I've read that a Model 17 barrel can be bored out to .32 caliber, and I've found a couple of gunsmiths who offer this service. However, the only Model 17 barrel I can find is a 17-4 from Numrich. It's a nonpinned barrel. Will it fit a 15-3 frame? (I realize the barrel will need to be cut for the pin, but are the threads the same?)

Sorry if someone has asked this before, but the number of posts with the term "pinned" is simply overwhelming.

Thanks,
Whisper

it should work, but you will have a hole in the frame where the pin would go.

Yes, it will work, although the gunsmith that fits it may have to dress the treads a little and of course cut the groove for the pin. I had Andy Horvath put a rebored 617 barrel (new and unpinned) on my Model 66 (no dash) frame to build Project 616.

By no means am I an expert but it should work. Kinda along the same lines but I put a 2" 625-10 non-pinned barrel in a 1917 pinned frame without much trouble. I ended up notching the barrel to accept the pin.
You can modify the barrel to accept a pin or possibly install dummy pins using 2 shortened pins inserted from both sides.

I just realized this is a 2 year old post but if it hasnt been built yet,
all the above plus a heads up that unless the donor 15 is a snub the 4" Model 15 -3 has a frame that is chamfered at the corners where it meets the barrel rib,
(Same as center gun below)
Shown L to R are the pre war K22, early post war K22 (same as Model 18/15 ) and later Model 17 .

The Model 17 used a slightly wider barrel rib starting in 1955 that will not mate to your 15-3 frame cosmetically.

Other options are to either find an older 6" narrow rib K-22 barrel (1947 - 1954)
or to use a Model 14 frame or a Model 15 frame that is dash 5 or higher as a donor.
Also if you use a full underlug barrel you will need to use a Model 19 frame
or a Model 15 or 14 that is dash 6 or higher Otherwise the ejector rod shroud will overhang the frame.

Just realized that a newer Model 17-9 barrel would mate cosmetically with a Model 15-3 frame as the newer IL/Mim Mod 17's had a narrower barrel rib.
