Default What happened to tru-oil?

I bought a new long gun yesterday, and as usual I purchased a spray can of Tru-oil to refinish the new stock to my liking. Now I havent bought a wood stock long gun in a few years so I decided to buy a new-er can of tru oil. I noticed the can was different, and the contents were WAY WAY different!

Tru oil use to be kind of thick and took a long time to get sticky between coats. NOT ANY MORE. This stuff seems to have been cut 3 times with fast dry solvents. It even states you can sand imperfections in 90+ minutes......

So whats the deal, this new tru oil is so different it worrys me ....thoughts?....

Default THINGS CHANGE

Likely to sell more to the instant gratification types that can't wait overnight for boiled linseed or tung oil to fully dry.

Hmm I haven't used tru-oil in a long time, but I would think the spray version has to be thinner than the stuff in a bottle.Tung oil with a good coat of wax after it's cured is my favorite, not very tough, but easy to repair.

Did this to my CMP Garand after going back and forth on finish. It looks awesome, at least in person, this cell phone photo is terrible. Well worth the week of work

Always used the spray. The older version of the spray was thicker and much slower drying.

With all the changes in the environmental rules,it's probably a different formula now.

Here's another Garand with Tung oil finish. May have overdone it, but sure is pretty. Stock was sanded to 1200, followed by I don't remember how many hand rubbed applications of oil. Rifle was built from a parts kit on an HRA barreled receiver from CMP.

Oh yeah, the inside of the stock is finished the same way.

Can't recall ever using the spray? I've always used the bottled Tru-Oil and have always cut it so it soaks in deeper and spread more evenly.

I've always used the bottle version. I hand rub all applications. I believe the last one I bought said it could be re-coated within 2 hours, but my criteria is to leave it to dry 24 hours between coats. I feel you get a better finish out of it. Usually 7 coats.

The bottled version hasn't changed since I started using it. The only problem is that stores stopped carrying it here in CA, no problem, Midway shipped me a quart which I promptly transferred to smaller containers which I squeezed the air out before I capped them. I hope they keep for at least a couple of months.

If anyone knows about finishing oil it's this guy ^^.
The Herretts I have gotten come with a light application of and recommendation
to use Formbys. I prefer Dem-Bart London (now Continental) oil finish.
It is a medium thickness and takes quite awhile to dry but brings out the figure well.
I have never been able to seal the little jars well enough to prevent them
from drying out after a few months making me wish they made even smaller
jars or tubes to use one for each project.

These are not really as shiny as the direct sunlight makes them out to be.
The Dem-Bart also never really hardens completely making it easy to
hold onto the gun. Maybe Kurac can tell us what is really in the Dem-Bart stuff.

Good polishing everyone!

I've used tru oil spray since the 70's. So, I kinda feel that I have a feel for it. This new tru oil is not the same at all. I now have two days spraying randomly throughout each day, with 25 coats on a brand new stock that was already factory finished, just dull.
I'd guess these 25+ coats might equal TWO coats in thickness of the former tru oil that I loved so much.
I use to be able to take the tru oil spray and make a stock look like glass. This new tru oil is so thin the wood sucks it up and just leaves the stock near semi-gloss at best.
This is my last tru oil purchase, I'll have to hunt something new for the next stock for sure.

Maybe so.

The stock looks really good, so dont get me wrong here, but in comparison to the older tru oil, its 5 times the work and not as good a quality finish.

If you store it in the freezer between uses, it will keep indefinitely.

Since I was complaining, I thought I'd show the work. Not the best by far, but as I stated earlier, it turned out fairly well.

Default I could probably count...

I could probably count on one hand the number of products that have stayed the same over the years. This happened to me with a medication that was the only thing that helped my digestive probs. The doctor said it worked far better than any other med he's used and it did. All of a sudden it comes out in a completely different form, which of course didn't work anywhere near as well.

Thanks BlueOval!

I bought it for my wife and it's a work in progress. I still need to add a sling, and a leather shell holder onto the stock, a Nikon on top and she'll be ready. It's a .243.....then she'll be sexy!

Cool idea but I don't think it will get by the boss. I am not too sure
either about the long term effect on the food in there.
Color me paranoid.
