Opinions on rechambering a 617 cylinder.
It's been done often enough on a 6 round cylinder, but is there enough meat on a Model 617 10 round cylinder to ream out the charge holes to accomadate .22 Magnum rounds? My Model 48 thinks it wants to become a 10-shooter (on a part time basis).

You have .222" vs. .224" (nominal) bore size. Is that significant?

It's a nice idea but there's not enough room for the .22 mag rims to clear each other. It would work as a five shooter...

Rims! Good point. It seems the obvious flew right over my head. Been happening a lot lately. Thanks.

Or just fit a 22 lr cylinder to your M 48 and use 22 ammo that has been "bumped" up in bullet diameter by one of the die sets that are available. Takes a little time to bump up a couple of hundred 22s, but it works very well to increase accuracy. I use Neal Waltz's die set, but others like Paco Kelley's just as well. The accuracy of unaltered 22 ammo thru my 4" M 48 was just so-so. With the altered ammo using the Waltz die accuracy became something to brag about. I found that in using the die IF the bond between the bullet and the case was broken that round would not group to the point the still bonded bullets would. So I got in the habit of gently trying every bullet for continued bond. I put them in different ammo boxes and use the broken bond ammo for kicking cans around on the range. Using the 'good' ammo, I have taken Picket Pin Ground Squirrels out to 30 yds.
BTW; I only bump up about 0.0015". Any more than that will break many more of the bullet to case bonding and didn't do anything for accuracy. .............. Big Cholla
