Seeking advice. I'm trying to get an old Model 1905 4th change (ca. 1924) back in shooting shape for a friend. I found that the side plate mounted spring and plunger which keeps tension on the hand (before they moved the hand spring back to the trigger) was completely missing. Obviously that is not a good situation. Not only does the hand flop back and disengage, the side plate hammer block is not retracted (looks like it might have been filed down a bit to keep it out of the way).
I have another 1905 (ca. 1919) and was going to pull out the hand spring/plunger to check the shape and size, but it doesn't seem to want to come out and I don't want to force it. It doesn't appear to be staked in place or anything. I assume the plunger is tapered to push in on the hammer block when depressed?
It isn't in great shape so I don't want to spend a fortune, but I would like to get it in shootable condition. I have considered switching out the trigger and hand with a post-1926 set, but that would not likely work well in the older side plate. I may try that anyway just to see if it would work. (a PO nickeled the hammer and trigger so I wouldn't mind swapping anyway).
Any and all ideas welcome. Nothing found at GPC. Is Jack First still in business? Anyone have a donor side plate they are willing to sell?
Thanks,
Rick
