Some One Modified a Cylinder Stop and Spring
I found another beautiful 2" 30-1. It has a like new finish with an imperceptible turn ring. The problem is the cylinder lock up is terrible. Looking at the top surface of the cylinder stop it appears that some one wanted to mitigate the turn ring, so I got inside to take a look. I found that some one had in fact filed or polished the top surface and also the side surfaces. Also the spring looks like a coil has been cut from one end. I say that because one end of the spring is cut straight and makes contact with the last coil. The other end is cut on an angle and does not rest against the last coil. Am I correct that the spring has been cut based on the appearance of the end of the spring? All that appears to have been done to the bolt stop does in fact keep the turn ring from happening but it does nothing for the function of the gun!
I'm hoping the stop and spring is available from S&W so I can get this one running.

No, there are no parts available anywhere, you must not keep this damaged gun. As an act of kindness, I will be willing to take this gun and destroy it for you so no one else will get this damaged gun.
Seriously, they should have these parts, I assume standard J Frame parts. I just happen to be looking for one of these, you're lucky to find one. Perfect little carry gun, and the 32 Long can be loaded to a respectable level. There is a recent thread about reaming out to 327.

When you call S&W be sure to ask for a cylinder stop. Bolt stops belong in bolt action rifles.

I have no idea why I keep calling it a bolt stop!? Getting old is a terrible thing sometimes. Thanks. I will call it a cylinder stop on the phone.

Luckily those parts are readily available and inexpensive. You should be good to go in a jiffy!

Well, they are on back order so the waiting game begins. I also corrected my original post to reflect the proper part, the cylinder stop.
In the mean time I'm going to check with Deer Creek Gun Shop to see if they have them. They have a pretty good stock of S&W parts.

If the current stop is junk anyway, can you not file the top surface a bit where it meets the frame to allow it to stand higher? It would do nothing for the spring tension, but might allow it to function till you can get new parts.

Check Brownell's and see if they have them in stock. There is always Numrich also, but would most probably be used parts.

I am sorry to be late in reading this. I have a couple of J-frame cylinder stops if you still need one. Once again I apologize for being late in reading this.
