Rem 700 trigger
I recently acquired a very slightly used Remington 700 VS in 22-250. It is a near clone of one I have been using for several years, but new enough it has the "J lock" in the action. I have adjusted the trigger on my older one using the "Remington Crisp" instructions, and it has been fine at about 2 lbs. This new rifle has a 6.25 lb trigger, and needs work. Can anyone tell me is this the same basic trigger as in my older (probably a 90's gun) trigger that can be adjusted the same way? If not I will need to install a Timney to make it useable. Rifle seems to shoot fine, but very difficult to shoot decent groups (and Prairie Dogs) with a 6.25 lb trigger.

Can't answer your specific question, but I do know Remington has an active, trigger-related recall on certain recent 700s; might want to check their site and see if yours is one of them. If it is and has to go in for warranty work, it's reported you can request they set the trigger at your preferred poundage.

Thread started today in regard to a recall on the XMP triggers. I have an XCR .223 that I bought last year. Was advertised as to have the 40 X trigger when I bought it. For kicks I ran the s/n and it is included in the recall. I contacted Remington and they emailed a call tag.
After thinking about stripping off the scope and bases and mailing I accessed Timney's site and ordered a trigger direct. $135 + shipping. Custom tuned at the shop for your desired pull weight. More than likely your gun is included in the recall. I'd get on the horn quick and order a Timney before they are unobtainable.

Hap beat me to the punch. Reported thousands of guns included in the recall. Unknown what the turn around time will be. I believe they have set up regional warranty centers as mine was destined to go to New York. It will be staying in my safe instead.

The J-lock is the biggest problem with your trigger pull. It causes binding of the main spring making it impossible to get a decent trigger pull. It can be removed and the parts replaced with non-lock parts.
I believe the J-Lock guns are of the old style trigger and not involved in the recall, but double check to be safe.

I already checked and is not included in the recall. A Timney will be installed shortly.

Brownells sells firing pin assemblies that will completely replace the J-lock assembly. I'd make this change before doing anything else.

When I check Brownells, I can find the NON-ISS Firing Pin assembly but only for Long action. I need one for a short action (22-250).

Some years ago, I bought a 700 Classic in 221 Fireball. It had the dreaded J-lock. As said above the J-lock has some undesirable effects. I installed the non-lock firing pin assembly sold by Brownell's and a Shilen trigger. The improvement was astonishing.
Addendum: I just noticed you found only the long-action assembly. I encountered the same thing and called them to get the right number. That was quite some time ago. I would have thought they fixed their website by now.

I do believe that the Brownells number is 767-000-916WB, currently out of stock. You can backorder, but double check that I've just listed the correct part number.
Hint: I pulled it up by what I thought the factory part number was. I expect the problem may be a dwindling supply of factory firing pin assemblies. They probably don't list it since the supply is limited/sporadic.
Numrich might be another source, but it'd probably be used. Numrich does, when there's a shortage of a needed part, get them privately produced.
A good gunsmith could shorten a long action firing pin. The cocking piece and cross pin are interchangable, springs will always be available.
