Default 640 cylinder stop timing.

I have a question. I had a 640 worked on by an armorer. The cylinder stop now releases from the trigger about half way through the rotation sequence. This allows the stop to spring up onto the cylinder prior to the ramp to the stop slot thus marking the cylinder. Is this ok or normal?

I purchased The S&W Revolver: A Shop Manual" Book by Jerry Kuhnhausen. In it, it says the stop is to release about half way through the trigger travel. This would also allow the stop to release prior to going into the slot.

Any help appreciated.

Good or bad, the newer J-frames all work that way.

Someone here posted a letter from S&W explaining the logic in allowing this to happen and acknowledging that the resulting wear would produce a cylinder line.

Oh, and you are not alone in wanting to prevent the resulting wear. Some folks polish the top of the cylinder stop.
