66 hammer nose issue
I just bought a 66 no dash. Looked in pretty good shape with some honest ware but dirty. Dry fired fine.
After a good clean job inside and out i took it to the range and and now the firing pin tilts up to the point it hits the top of the frame under the sight part of the time. There does not appear to be a spring on the nose.
Ordered a new rivet and spring from Brownells. Is this the fix or is there something wrong with the nose? Anyone else have this problem before?

K frames don't have the spring there (N frames do.) I noticed a little 'kiss' on the frame that was presumably from the hammer nose on multiple k frames.
Sounds normal, I wouldn't be worried at all.

It is not kissing it is hanging hard to the point it does not enter the channel. Click not bang! I will try to post some pics tomorrow.

Just a thought... possibly someone installed an incorrect hammer nose, i.e., to long? When your parts are delivered, you might want to compare the length of the new K-frame HN w/ that of the current HN in your revolver. Just a thought. Beware of these sorts of thoughts... born of hot coffee and a minute or two of idle time! Sincerely. brucev.

Hammer Nose
Not uncommon for the nose to come in contact with the top edge of that canopy as it enters the frame. I've attached a photo of an OEM hammer nose with a slot in it to give you an idea of where, and how deep to cut the slot in your existing part, should you choose to do so. Slot depth should be approx. 1/2 the length of the spring's oal. I've found that the Dremel cut-off wheels are just about the perfect size to create this opening. Make sure you wear safety glasses, and try not to generate too much heat which could compromise the integrity of the part.....and remember to remove any burrs created by the cutting operation prior to re-installation.
You'll even notice a different "sound" from the gun during dry firing after this modification is completed.

Apparently some K frames do have the spring, I have several. You may have dislodged the spring or debris during you cleaning. My 66 no dash has the spring.

Thank you for this excellent idea! Never occurred to me. Of course, there are a lot of things that don't occur to me. But this is really a great idea.

Question, Is there a difference in size between the k frame hammer nose and the N frame hammer nose other than the spring notch, and are the rivets the same diameter?

As a pre-88 model I need a hammer nose that has a longer pin than the post 88. (Got one and I did not extend into the frame.) Anyone know where I can find one? All the usual sources seem to be out!

I just use a 1/8" flat-tipped punch......reinstall components then lay the hammer flat on a peening block and strike the rivet on each side to expand it's end slightly. Check after install that the rivet is flush or below the rivet hole on both sides of the hammer and that the rivet cannot be pushed side to side (it is firmly peened in place)

I used a larger center punch to slightly flare the rivit ends. Go slow and alternate sides to keep it centered.
