best cleaning and lubrication products for 686 Stainless Steel
recently bought a 686 plus SS revolver and wondering what is the best cleaning and lubricating products to use? every gun shop i been to has hoppes 9 as the primary cleaning and lube, is this stuff safe and effective? are you supposed to clean with the solvent and then leave the lube in the barrel and cylinders? there any products that clean, lubricate, and protect the revolver from rust and make subsequent cleaning easier?
what cleaning/ lubricating products are good for the M&P 15-22 Matte Black?
thanks.

Well, regarding the Hoppe's...yes, it's a safe and effective cleaner and won't harm a gun's finish. There's a reason it's been around for over 100 years and continues to be stocked by probably every gun store in the country. While other products seem to come and go, Hoppe's is still pretty much the standard as far as I'm concerned. And in over fifty years, I've never been in a gun shop that didn't carry it. The stuff is like cleaning patches... everyone sells it.
I sometimes leave lube in cylinders and barrel, but swab it out before shooting.
You shouldn't have to worry much, if any, about stainless rusting. Matter of fact, if you take proper care of your guns, you shouldn't have a rust problem, period.
Speaking for myself only, I have only one matte black gun (a Mossberg), and I use the same thing on it as I use on my blued and SS guns. Someone else could advise you better on that.

I've used Hoppe's on my 686 for years. Works great, no issues.

This isn't hard:
#9 and any gun oil you have on hand.
No magic here: what's worked for 100 years still works.
No need for the cool new products.
Unless you own stock, of course.

Many folks use CLP (cleaner, lubricant, protectorate) by "Breakfree" products. It's seems to work well. I use Hoppe's and a gun grease (Hoppe's gun grease, "Lubriplate", or some other well known grease, there are several).

Hoppes #9 is great stuff. Switched to Ed's Red (Google it) a long time ago. Sure like that. Old Hoppes #9 had Nitro Benzene in it. Still have a bottle of that. Take the cap of infrequently and sniff lightly, AH!!

I use the best: Ed's Red for cleaning and Mobile One 5w-30 mixed with ATF 3:1.

Ballistol or mpro7 to clean and some slide glide from Brian Enos to lube.

We all have our favorites, and most all work ,for the job (task) they were designed for. as noted above many of us use what is handy ,what we have laying around and whatever WORKS for us..........yes, even good old kerosene and WD-40 work............
gun specific, we like Shooters Choice, Breakfree CLP and RIG on a sheepskin.........

One of the MOST talked about topics on gun forums! Talk to 10 people and you'll get 10 different answers. IMHO we all have our pet gun-care products, but the most important thing here is not what you use - but that you DO USE IT on a regular basis.
I have my favorite too, but if you choose just about any of the main brand products that have been on the market for any length of time and use them, you should be good to go.
