My 32 S&W 1903 second change is supposed to be pre 1910 and it hasn't got one. Just a ring of metal on the rod itself to hold the springs back inside the cylinder. No collar like more recent models.
I just checked Numerich and although they don't have an exploded view of this model they do have a parts list and there is not one on it either.

I have a new spring and also looked at the old one and there has to be something to hold it back. It currently just slides up the Extractor rod.
I am thinking it has some sort of washer...
Well I put a small washer on there and it does not function as far as closing the cylinder correctly. So I worked with the spring some to insure it was snug on the Extractor rod just as you stated. Put it back together and it worked perfect. Thanks for your help sharing how yours was made. It really helped me...
Ya, my large spring was close to being able to go past the "ring" on the center rod. When I reassembled it I used needle nose pliers to carefully reform that end a bit to tighten it up some.
Now I have to find some brass, dies and a bullet mold and replace the pearl grips.
