Would someone please explain to me what the term counter bore means with S&W cylinders?

case rims sit level with end of cylinder due to machined recess. Found in older revolvers, not current.

The gun pictured below is not a Smith and Wesson(it's the other Wesson-a Dan Wesson) but the set-up is the same on S&Ws so should give you some idea of what it looks like.
This was what I just happened to have handy-if folks would prefer I'll try and get a picture of a counterbored(or "recessed") S&W

Thanks for the information. Would a newer cylinder that is not counter bored be compatible with a S&W M66 that presently has a counter bored cylinder?

Besides the need to be fitted and possible gap problems between the cylinder and barrel there you would need a new frame lug. The cylinder is held from moving rearward when open by the frame lug. A recessed cylinder has a shorter lug because of the material that encloses the cartridge head. A cylinder that wasn't recessed would have a lot of movement rearward movement when ejecting and might not slide back into battery very well. Numerich shows the earliest model 66 having a pressed in lug so that wouldn't be that hard to change.
