Default Counter bore

Would someone please explain to me what the term counter bore means with S&W cylinders?

case rims sit level with end of cylinder due to machined recess. Found in older revolvers, not current.

Pretty sure the 22lr's are still counterboared.

The gun pictured below is not a Smith and Wesson(it's the other Wesson-a Dan Wesson) but the set-up is the same on S&Ws so should give you some idea of what it looks like.

This was what I just happened to have handy-if folks would prefer I'll try and get a picture of a counterbored(or "recessed") S&W

Thanks for the information. Would a newer cylinder that is not counter bored be compatible with a S&W M66 that presently has a counter bored cylinder?

Besides the need to be fitted and possible gap problems between the cylinder and barrel there you would need a new frame lug. The cylinder is held from moving rearward when open by the frame lug. A recessed cylinder has a shorter lug because of the material that encloses the cartridge head. A cylinder that wasn't recessed would have a lot of movement rearward movement when ejecting and might not slide back into battery very well. Numerich shows the earliest model 66 having a pressed in lug so that wouldn't be that hard to change.
