Default Viking Tactics Rand CLP

I am told that Hoppe's No. 9 is not recommended for nickel plated finishes because it contains ammonia. Is Viking Tactics Rand CLP safe for nickel plated finishes? Just picked up a mint Model 29 Classic and am taking it to the range today. Would have preferred a blued gun, but the price was right and it is very pretty with wood instead of ugly rubber grips. Thanks for the help.

Their website says safe on all metals. But to make sure you might want to give them a call.

But, btw, Hoppe's website says safe on nickel ;-)

This is another case of internet myth. Hoppes #9 does not and never has had ammonia as an ingredient. Use Hoppes, just don't leave a wet coat on the Nickel, or soak plated parts in it.

You will also see that the reason ammonia is bad for Nickel plate is there is Copper under the Nickel! This is also incorrect regarding high-quality firearms. Bumpers yes, cheap foreign guns maybe, S&W never!

Most firearms maintenance products are fine for Nickel, if not there is usually a warning on the labeling. You should avoid products containing ammonia, it's easy, just read the list of ingredients on the labeling! They won't tell you everything, but they will warn about hazardous ingredients.

The original hoppes #9 does say on the bottle to not soak nickel plated firearms. And to wipe nickel plated firearms dry when your finished cleaning.

I have used Hoppes on nickel for years with no harmful effect but I have never soaked a gun in it either

I did notice on the link in the above post there is a new hoppes #9 "Synthetic" and it does state clearly it is safe for nickel. However I just tried to buy some on line and it does not seem to be available yet.
