Default Seeking source for good 25 .45ACP cylinder

I have a four-inch Model 25-5 in .45 Colt. I found a 25-2 cylinder in new condition on Ebay but it turns out to have bad mouths.
My SnS 230s fall through almost unslowed on two chambers and only barely stick in the others.
I'd like to see about acquiring a good one but don't know where to look. Numrich and Brownell's are out of them.
Is Smith a place to call?
Thanks
Bill

A 25-2 or for that matter any S&W 45ACP cylinder will not work in your 25-5 as they are approx .135 to short on the barrel end. You would have a huge cylinder to barrel gap. The 25-5 and later 45 colts have approx .135 barrel protruding into the frame window than the ACP models. Check the length of the ACP cylinder you purchased against your colt cylinder for length and you will see what I mean. This was not true on the 25-3 models in 45 colt as they used a shorter cylinder than the later colt guns.

You could have either your or another colt cylinder cut for moon clips so it will fire both or have a 44 mag cylinde5 reworked to 45 acp.

I'm aware of the cylinder length differences. Given that the gun is already modified, I was going to have the local smith, who is quite good, mount the ACP cylinder and set the barrel back and make the other modifications such as cylinder lug.
But I'm not willing to waste the time on a big-mouthed cylinder.
No, I neglected to leave Ebay feedback.
I do have a surplus -2 .357 cylinder from a Model 28. Hm. The length is almost identical to the Colt cylinder. I wonder if that could be drilled out to ACP.
I do suspect a -2 .44 cylinder would be much easier for the smith to deal with, though, and having both calibers available is sort of attractive.
Thank you all for your responses.

I wouldn't jump to blame the cylinder provider, I have found several new cylinders with varying outlet sizes, and not square. Also new barrels with extremely deep throats. I don't know if these are 2nd's escaping the factory, or S&W just has terrible quality control. New doesn't always mean good anymore.

Most M28 cyliners are recessed. You have to machine the rear of the cylinder to allow use of .45 ACPs in moon clips and to use .45 Auto Rim cartridges.

I may have a new stainless M625 cylinder in .45 ACP. PM me if interested.

My understanding is that many, if not most, M25-2 cylinders have large chamber throats. I just measured the throats on a NOS cylinder that I have and the .456" pin will fit into all of them, although its tighter in 2 chambers than the other 4. None will accept the .457" pin. The throats on my M25-5 measure almost identical.

The easiest way to solve that problem is to just load jacketed or the new Powder Coated bullets. My 25-2 has .455 throats and doesn't like cast bullets too well, but put jacketed or Powder Coated through it and it shines. Especially the 225 gr. TC bullets from Bayou.

H-
The SnS bullets I was shooting are polymer coated. Still poor performance overall from this gun.
In fact, I was at the club range just yesterday doing some maintenance and had the 25 along.
I had just put up a box of .45 Colt loads with the SnS 230s in front of 7.6gr Unique. Not quite a full-power load but still should have some oomph.
Not so- the average for six was only 720fps and the ES wasn't good, something like 60-70fps.
I will have to try another bullet.
Still, my hope for the gun, which was not cheap, was to have power in the form of .45 Colt loads and moons in the form of .45ACP for competition and protection (I can get sub-three second shot-to-shot reloads with .45ACP, still slower than my Government Model but not exactly shabby.)
