Default S&W 45ACP/45LC conversion

This may sound a little off base. A gentleman has a Mod 28 that has been converted to 45 LC for sale on this forum. That made me wonder if a 45 ACP cylinder could also be fit to that gun making it a convertible? Anyone know if this is possible or has been done?

Thanks,
Gary

If the cylinders or the same length it should work. I think the ACP cylinders are shorter than the 28 cylinder.

I am not sure if the original cylinder was used and modified, or maybe a 45 ACP cylinder from a Mod 25, are they interchangeable ? I assumed that it was a new/different cylinder……maybe not. Dan Dwyer was the smith that did the work.

I you cut the cylinder for moonclips the right way
you can shoot both .45Colt and .45acp.

Welcome to TK Custom.com & Moonclips.com

I did it to my 25-3 and it worked like a charm

I have a couple S&Ws that are chambered for 45 Colt and cut for full moons and 45ACPs. Sweet.

If the cylinder is a reamed model 28 cylinder or from a 25-3 45 Colt it is the same length as a stock 45ACP cylinder as far as the front of the cylinder goes. The rear of a ACP cylinder is .030 shorter for the moon clips on a non recessed cylinder. The cylinders from 25-5 45 Colt and later are the same length as 41 and 44 mag cylinders without recesses.

EDIT

I just went and looked at the ad. Sweet looking gun. It looks like the original 28-2 cylinder was used. The length of the barrel protruding thru fame to cylinder is correct for shorter cylinder plus the rear of the cylinder to recoil shield is very close which means it is for recessed rims which never came on any of the 45 Colt models. That cylinder could be cut for full moons and ACPs. What does this mean to your idea of a second 45ACP cylinder? A stock ACP cylinder is .030 shorter for the clips than a non recessed Colt cylinder, then if you add the length of the recesses on the current cylinder it means another .060 for a total of .090 longer in the rear than a stock 45ACP cylinder. This means if a stock 45 ACP cylinder was mounted you would have an extra .090 movement of the cylinder to the frame lug (which is set for a recessed cylinder) when the cylinder was open and ejecting. I have done the dual cylinder setup using a non recessed 45 Colt cylinder and a 45 ACP cylinder and the extra .030 is not a problem, but an extra .090 would be a lot and you would have a lot of forward movement of the cylinder when returning to battery position. The center rod of the ejector might even hang on the recoil shield.

The problem with using a separate ACP cylinder is the frame lug on a Model 28 is set up for a longer cylinder and the shorter ACP cylinder will have a running start before it contacts the lug.

When I converted my 28-2 to ACP I had that problem until I installed a new frame lug.

Thanks for the information guys, I don't think I would want to alter the 28-2 to accept 45aACP…..too nice of a gun. I want a shooter so will look for a 625. What about 45 Auto Rim, would they work in a 625 45LC?

No Auto Rim has a extra thick rim same thickness as .45 ACP and a moon clip.

Why have one gun when you can have 2. Its a pain having a convertible, wrong cylinder, wrong ammo, wrong sight hold. 2 guns twice the fun.

yes its possible, I have a 1917 with a 25-3 lc cylinder. But again why . You Can get 45LC speed out of auto rim cases. And less chance of double charge due to the smaller case. But hey ive got one so I understand the phrase, cause I can.
