Default S&W 642 Airweight

What is everyones favorite for front sight improvement on the 642? My front sight blade is non-pinned.

I have a satin nickel 442 that has non pinned ramp too. Changing it would be very costly so I'll leave it alone, but if I could it would be the Big Dot (I have that on my 43C). That said the rear sight is too narrow for the Big Dot.

Learn to "point shoot"
No inexpensive way to change that sight. It is not a target gun.

Admittedly, I might be a "slow learner", especially if you ask my wife.

But, for me, the answer was buying a pile of ammo and practicing at our local Pima Pistol Club. Once you reach a reasonable level of experience and proficiency, only occasional shooting is needed to keep you sharp. But, you may have to work at it for a while at first. I did.

Oh, and stick with no longer than 7 yards for a while. It's a great confidence builder when you can see you target.

In any event, you now have a good excuse to go shooting. If my experience is any indication, you will be surprised and pleased at how well you shoot with the original sights after several hundred rounds.

Best of luck and have fun!

Old Cop:
To accommodate that Big Dot, you can widen the rear hog trough yourself or send it to somebody like Cylinder & Slide. As an alternative to that, you could have them install their Extreme Duty rear sight. For that, they will also sight it in with the ammo and distance you specify. I like that setup because it makes for a sight picture that is much easier for me to use.

Easiest think is to apply paint to the front sight.

Put a Crimson Trace Laser Grip on it. (You'll thank me one day).

Like electraclyde said, learn to point shoot, it's not a target gun. Point shooting costs nothing, except ammo, and no gunsmithing, no sending it away, no purchasing of expensive accessories. just time on the range. If you like to shoot. And you probably do. Give it a try. At first (my experience) I couldn't hit the side of a cow at 7 yards, especially with a DAO. But as time passed I not only could hit the side of a cow, I graduated to actual paper targets! As a former LEO I can tell you that "in the gravest extreme" sights become irrelevant.

Even easier is to borrow your wife's brightest fingernail polish. It even comes with a little brush!
