Default Model 41 design question

Does anyone know the purpose of the diagonal ridges at the rear of the Model 41 on the top of the slide and under the barrel just below the rear sight?

To keep any of the usual RF crud-bullet lube, lead shavings, burnt and unburnt powder, etc.- from jamming the gun.

The Model 41 and 46 aren't the only .22 Cal. semi-automatics with this feature.
