Short/long action ratchet differences? frankingun for my shop pistol
Started in on this 44HE frame I had lying around, and decided I'd make a nice open carry revolver for around the shop. I've always loved the Heavy Duty 38/44 and my grandfather carried 5" as a young cop. I still have that revolver, but the 4" pistols always looked and balanced better in my mind. So I thought I'd go this route.
I was able to find a s prefix 4" tube off a 38/44 HD as well as a NOS never fitted S prefix cylinder. I don't think from my measurements I will have any trouble fitting up the cylinder but wondered in the ratchets on the ejector had any differance as the frame will be short action and the cylinder is of short action vintage most likely. Wanted to make sure I wasn't going to have problems in this area before I moved ahead.
I was able to fit a Mod.28 cylinder and ejector to a '37 vintage Brazilian. Bored it out to .45 LC and all was harmonious. Mark PS What is the first name of the guy you got the shop from?
This is a 44HE or 455 frame serial 597XX barrel and cylinder are S prefix parts. Cylinder is I believe new old stock as it only has a s stamp no numbers and from running calipers around it is a bit oversized in all the right places. I want to produce a classic revolver to go with the classic type shop feel I'm hoping to have. I will get photos of this project up later today.
On the shop. I won't give away to much mainly for competitive reasons as of now. I'm still on track to be in a shop Aug - Dec depending on how things go. I may have the shop in aug but then still need to get FFL, insurance remodel ext ... Once I have FFL I will soft open and take a few jobs. Right now it's I'm getting business plan, LLC and financing taken care of. I was in mobile communications prior to gunsmithing and if any of you know that business showing your hand early will get you broadsided very quick. I will keep you guys updated and once my LLC is complete and back I will release the name.
This is a frame I got the same time I picked up the Brazilian that was chopped and have finally come into the parts to get her going. I could use a line in a couple pre war n frame hammers.
I'll get more up, but this was me the other night getting all the numbers and comparing it to the 38/44 I have
Yes, I will put the lanyard ring on this one but may modify it to a simple round ring vs the long oval version
Also do we have and engravers on here, thought about sinking some gold or silver into this one.
You should not have any problems with the ratchet pads. I have fitted new hands into guns as far back as 1917's. What kind of hammer block does your gun use? The post war style or the pinned in the sideplate style? There are thread differences in the smaller parts between pre-war and post war guns but not in the barrel.
