Problem with a 66 indexing
Got ahold of a M66-2 that had never been shot. Was hidden in a closet and found by his wife after he passed. All was good for the first 100 rounds. Now it won't shoot 10 rounds without locking up. The cylinder won't index. Trigger will only move a little then stop. Hammer will not move. If I move the cylinder by hand then it will work for a few rounds then lock again.
I pulled the side plate off and it seems like the problem is with the cylinder stop????? or part 37 in this blow up.

Or something else. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

MAY BE THE CULPRIT
tenntucker: Maybe it's too obvious, but have you checked to see if the ejector rod has unscrewed somewhat? They're left hand threads, so turn counter-clockwise to tighten. Since the gun was unfired, it could be just an easy fix.

Can you cock it with the cylinder open? If so the cylinder may be dragging on the yoke barrel. Does it spin freely when open?
Since the gun sounds like it sat for years I'd suggest it be completely cleaned/lubed in case it's dry/gummy inside. Remove the cylinder from the yoke & make sure it's clean there too.

No.

Yes.

Did that. Didn't help.

Yes. That was my initial check.

Have you checked for powder debris under the extractor. Anytime I get sloppy about holding my revolvers vertical while ejecting the empties I seem to end up with this happening. When it does it can prevent the cylinder from closing at all or created enough drag that I can't pull the trigger through it's full stroke. If you see someone blowing on their extractor they aren't doing it for luck, it just means they forgot to put a toothbrush in their range kit again. BTW, blowing does help as does holding the barrel vertical when ejecting the empties.

It will shoot fine for 6/12 rounds then lock up. I'll manually index the cylinder about an 8th of an inch then it will fire.
Good to go for another 6/12 rounds.

Check the Hand Torsion Spring. It might not be installed correctly or perhaps is broken. If you need a replacement, you have an older 66-2. I have read that the newer model springs are shorter, while you would need an older model one.
See this for more info: K frame hand torsion spring.
