Default Shortening cyl/bbl gap ?s

Got an old Model 19 with an 11/1000's barrel cylinder gap. Gun has been used but not abused. How do I shrink that gap down to around .006?

Appreciate the help!

In short, barrel-cylinder gap is corrected by removing the barrel and shaving a turn's worth from the shoulder and re-mounting it. Often, the barrel face has to then be cut back to achieve proper gap, and the forcing cone re-cut, too.

It's a professional's job to be done right.

A B-C gap of .011" is barely out of spec (factory spec is .003" to .010"); if she's shooting well, I wouldn't worry about correction unless there are other issues that need attention.

Just so you're certain, B-C gap is measured by holding the cylinder rearward and inserting the feeler gauge between the barrel and cylinder faces on whichever side has more gap, unless both sides are equal (often there's a thousandths or two difference between the left and right sides if either the barrel or cylinder face isn't perfectly true; because of this, do be sure to measure gap on each charge hole).

Unfortunately the .011 gap is with the cylinder in it's (at rest) with no pressure forward or back. Afraid to see how much it would be with the cylinder pulled back. Check it tomorrow!

It has been posted here that the factory's acceptable gap has been increased from 0.004-0.010" to 0.004"-0.012". I would not be enthusiastic about having an 0.011" gap but I also would not pay the $100 to $150 cost to have the barrel set back.

Measure it held back, on each charge hole, from whichever side (if any) you can get a larger feeler gauge through; the feeler should be snug but not forced.

If you want, on one of the charge holes measure gap with the cylinder held rearward, then again with the cylinder held forward; the difference between the two measurements is your endshake.

It's true that there have been different numbers posted by members for current factory B-C specs; .003" to .010" is what S&W recently quoted to me.

I agree that it isn't worth correcting yet unless the revolver has other issues.
