Default Just Dropped My Baby Off With Nelson Ford

This weekend. Based upon recommendations on this forum I wanted to get my Dad's police revolver an action job.

Great guy, very knowledgeable. had fun chatting with him until another customer came in.

Glad I decided to make the drive and have the work done by someone as knowledgeable as him. I wanted to do it before all of these old master gunsmiths start retiring.

This is it in original as I got it after Dad passed:

And current setup with Grashorn's and a BK grip:

and faithfully on my side in a recent carbine course:

I carry it often in the desert and when traveling so I cannot wait to get it back. I feel kind of naked.

The 442-1 no lock I just picked up will take some of the sting out of being separated from it I suppose.

I know it will be worth the wait but I miss it already....

I hope you kept an eye on your gun all the time you were there. Nelson has a "trick" he likes to pull on customers that get distracted!!

You should really elaborate and not make thinly veiled accusations without explaining it

This isn't an accusation it's a fact and I know he used to do this. He'd keep a welded up junk 45 auto under the counter and when a new customer would bring in a gun for work he'd try to distract him. Once distracted Nelson would take the junker and heave it over his shoulder back into the equipment area. After the gun quit bouncing off the machinery he'd tell the customer he'd get to fixing it as soon as he found the gun.
You really need to lighten up a bit!

Well thank you for explaining things if you don't mind in the first place maybe people wouldn't think you're trying to make accusations if you just explain yourself.

When you think someone's telling you that the professionals going to mess with your weapon it's hard to lighten up.

Great looking gun and rig, made even more special to you for having belonged to your father. I envy you for having something like that.

Regarding members joking with you: I've been the object of their humor, smart aleck remarks, and downright derision many times now. It used to make me mad. Now, unless it's really nasty, it's like a big yawn. It's an Internet forum, not real life. It's totally meaningless in the overall arc of your life.

Thanks, yeah it is special and it is my desert gun, my bbq gun, and my home defense gun all rolled into one. I can't wait to get it back, better than when I dropped it off.

As for the joshing, I wasn't mad, I was just thinking if you had a problem with Mr. Ford why don't you just tell me... it did not occur to me that someone would mess around in this subsection. Caught me off guard is all.... apologies all around

Eb07, based on past experience I think you can expect someone to make a wisecrack at any time, at any place, around here.

Mr. Ford will take good care of your 19, and you have to admire a man with a sense of humor like that.

I agree with Joel, it's best to assume first that someone is pulling your leg and ask before assuming the worst and start blazing. No apologies necessary, (although it was classy on your part), you'll figure out these pranksters eventually.

What a wonderful treasure you have to remember your dad by!

Nelson Ford is located in North Phoenix and is probably best known for his work on 45 autos. He has a great reputation particularly for his trigger jobs.
He also has a "sense of humor" as I indicated above!

He is a class act.

Got it back yesterday, on his day off. He took the time to meet me and complete delivery as I live rural and don't like city folk much so tend to stay in the sticks. it has been done for a few weeks now. Just now got to the city.

He tightened her up and added a spring to the firing pin. smoothed up the trigger edges and the trigger job, oh boy.... the double action is beautiful now.

Glad I got this done.

I consider myself lucky to have a Ford-tuned 625 that came from one of our forum members. It's a delight - one of the nicest tune jobs I've seen, and I was told it was his "mid-level" action job.

Glad you were well pleased with your Model 19. I just wish I lived closer and could drop by in person. Have to admire a man with a sense of humor like that.

Took her out for some longer range shooting at my "private range"

Here she is with 158 gr SWC loaded to magnum velocity with some 2400....

25 yards, one handed, standing, slow fire, double action only

5 shots to each target:

6 shots to the head at 25 yards:

I am so happy with this trigger.

Great looking revolver, especially given it's history. His prices look pretty good too...

As far as sarcasm here on SWF, I have been embarrassed several times when I didn't realize someone was pulling my leg ... That said, this is my fav place on the inter-world and I visit here every day...

He did such a great job on my model 19, I contacted him about doing work on my 29-2 and 442-1.

Not many firearm artisans like him around anymore.

Stopped in Friday. He is a great guy. Let me pull the trigger on his carry 642 and if mine comes out even remotely close to that I will be a very happy camper. Can't wait.

Also showed me the 29-2 was sticking on a cylinder. Sure glad I brought it in.

Now all of my smiths have been in his care. Love his stories. Most of the artisans and craftsman in all trades are retiring. We are becoming a throw away society. Craftsman are a rare breed. Glad I'm getting this done.

I live in Indiana. I was looking for someone to perform action jobs on my 686 & 640. The name that kept coming up was Dennis Reichard. He, like Mr. Ford, is very good at what he does to a revolver. I had the "deluxe action job" performed on both of them and they are unreal now. Smooth as glass. If you live in In. contact him @ Sand Burr Gun Ranch (also on the web). You won't be sorry.

eb07, great looking 4 inch 19. I spent a lot of time behind a 19-3 from 1970 through 1979.

RELAX, it's the interweb. Without the rude remarks, wisecracks, onion busting, plain ol insults, where would the entertainment value be? It'd be like taking the crashes out of Nascar, or the fighting out of hockey. Someone forgot to post a "lighten up Francis". BTW, VERY nice rig & Dad would be proud. No relation to Fords in Crystal river Fl?

Ok now I have my own Nelson Ford story. The more I deal with him the more I like his personality.

So my wife is down in phoenix and I had her take the tickets in and pick up both my 29-2 and my 442-1 which are done. I had to stay home due to work and puppies.

She sends me a photo of them just to verify she got the right ones.

Afterwards I ask her how it went because of course he is a bonafide wiseass and funny guy. Last time I brought her to drop them off he was making comments such as: you are brave, not many people bring their wives in here so they don't know what they spend.

She tells me: he offered me 200 bucks for both revolvers.

She laughingly declined, but of course he was joking.

I cannot stop laughing. He really has an old school humor that not many newsters can appreciate today.

I get my babies back tomorrow. Photos of the 29-2 with the new stags I bought coming by friday.

Cannot wait to ring some steel with my improved triggers and tuned actions! The Model 19 is a sweet shooter now. Maybe an all smith range day is in order soon.

I was also wrong about my post, I forgot that have the 6" 586 no dash that still needs a trip down to the valley for some tender loving care.

586 No Dash Added

probably get it down before christmas

I'm glad this thread was resurrected. That's a gorgeous revolver, withe the bonus history. Congrats.

I can't help but notice the irony of the picture, though. You with that elegant weapon on your hip- shooting that Star Wars looking thingy...
