Model 69 44 Magnum Custom Barrel Job
Today I started making a custom barrel for my M69. The project involves removing the 4.25 inch barrel and putting on a custom made 5.25 inch barrel and custom made shroud. The goal is not just to add an inch but also to increase the shroud profile all the way out to the edge of the frame increasing the weight for recoil management, also to put a better quality barrel in because the one in there has issues. I am very busy with my next product release and have very little time so this will be as quick and simple as possible. Really I have NO TIME to mess with this and should not be doing it at all right now but since I took it apart I need to squeeze it in and get it done so I can shoot it again. This will be one solid piece including the sight. Here is what I have done so far:
1- Made leaded steel barrel removal tool, beat it into the barrel until the rifling engraved into the driving bands on the pin. Removed barrel and shroud.
2- Measured frame face and made a CAD drawing using a program called EZCAM.
3- Turned and bored piece of 303 stainless for the shroud blank. Used 303 because it is easy to machine and time is a factor. Doing a simple Dan Wesson system with barrel nut unlike the last barrel project I did with a muzzle brake which was very complicated. (see last barrel project I did on a 500 S&W Magnum HERE.)
4- Rough milled the shroud.
Still needs to be done: Finish shroud profile milling (may have custom cutter ground for this which will set me back a few days to a week). Turn down stainless 8 and 3/8" barrel pulled off a model 629 to make internal barrel. Will post more pix as this comes along.

Once in high school I took a machine shop course. Then and there I decided to take up law enforcement as a profession. If I can't screw it together or use nails, I'm not doing it. Great work Great craftsmanship. I also checked out your 500 S&W thread, great job with that too.

UPDATE: Today I worked on the inner barrel sleeve I am making from a 629 barrel. Trying to get the turning done so I can free up the lathe and get a big job back on it. Todays work:
1- Make brass center that fits in barrel
2- Rough turn 629 barrel
3- Saw off round blank from 629 barrel
4- Thread frame end barrel thread and cut forcing cone.

Thank you. I have been asked a few times but I don't take on custom work. Years ago I would occasionally make something custom for someone (not firearm related) but now my focus is on my titanium items.

As in the 500 thread, you are an extremely talented and creative machinist!! I really enjoy watching your projects come to life. Wish I could shoot them, but you'll have to do a range report for us!

Nice work. Simple barrel removal idea. I was going to use low temp solder if I did mine.
Anyone can learn to match with a lathe. Three grand for a decent old lathe, and another 3 or so for tooling. Then buy a bunch of metal and by the time you spent another 3 or so on wrecked tooling and metal and you'll be on your way to do a Barrel. LOL

PSD: I believe I see a "Buck Chuck" there on your lathe. I use a three jaw Buck for my day to day use. It is a real time saver. I only use a four jaw when the shape of the item being turned requires a four jaw. .....

Make a snub barrel for the 69 and you will sell a few. No gunsmiths that I can find will touch that 2 piece barrel.

No idea why. They come apart easy. I don't see what all the fuss is about.
Anyway, here is the progress I made during the middle of the week. Pictures:
1- Making a Dan Wesson style barrel nut. This one is a little thicker than a stock barrel nut but same thread (21/32-40TPI)
2- Finished barrel and nut
3- Shroud partially roughed out. Milled out for frame tabs.
4- Checking the fit while milling the slot for the ball detent.
5- Milling the shroud closer to finished shape.

Today I finished the barrel as much as I can for now. It is ready to be taken to the range and fired.
1- Checking roughed out shroud for fit.
2- Cut slot for ejector rod. (No pictures)
3- Cut top sight profile (No pictures)
All done and ready to shoot but needs a bunch of final cosmetic finishing. I need to sand out all the rough mill marks and bead blast it to match the rest of the gun. I also need to tape off the sight blade and paint it black. For pictures I colored it black with a Sharpie. Job increased barrel length by 1 inch and increased weight by 8.4 ounces.

Fabulous job!
Hey I recognize that barrel nut tool! (Got one just like it)
Now you are going to have to have a custom holster made.
Do you recycle the swarf?
Looks like way more than half the weight of your bar stock was cut off.

With turning chips I always separate them into different barrels and recycle them. With milling chips sometimes with small jobs chips get mixed together and then they have to be thrown away but I save as much as I can when I can.

RANGE REPORT: Took this to the range and fired a few rounds. I was a little surprised this kicks the same, if not more than the original configuration. I know the addition of the one inch on the barrel length increased the velocity but I would have thought the additional weight would have tamed it down a bit. One factor could be the fact that the ridiculously lousy cylinder gap of the original barrel is now a nice and tight .005 gap. Maybe the real bad gap was letting a lot of gasses escape.

Maybe another one with a muzzle brake eventually but for now personal project / play time is over for a while.
