Default S&W mod 19-4 frame finish

Hi all,
I've just received my second hand Mod 19-4 I purchased for a good price here in France. I knew that the black finish on the gun was damaged that is why the previous owner gave a good deal.
Now that I've the gun in hand, I noted that only the frame is damaged as you can see on the pictures, while the barrel and cylinder are perfect. It means that something went wrong in the process of blackening (***** I don't know the word in English) during the manufacturing of the revolver.
It is only cosmetic and only on the surface. It's not deep rust, you can hardly feel it with your finger passing over the stains...
Have you got any idea on how I can enhance the finish or repair?
Many thanks for your help...
Regards from the Old World
Jack

Jack,
Welcome to the S&W Forum.

It looks like a liquid chemical or substance came in contact with the blue finish. I do not think anything will appreciably improve it short of a total refinish. You could try cold bluing the areas yourself but the areas will be just as noticeable but only darker. I'd leave the areas alone and enjoy shooting it.

I would at least get some cold blue and apply some for protection on the affected areas. I have only used Birchwood Casey Super Blue cold bluing. It will look better than it does now. A 19-4 from 1980 doesnt have all that much collectability anyway especially with bluing damage.

Many thanks for your advice. I purchased it to enjoy and a cosmetic issue is not gonna upset me that much. I'll try to find some cold bluing at least to protect it.
Have a good evening...
Regards.

nothing else but a complete stripping and reblueing of the gun will work. At the least keep it well oiled till you can get it redone or it will rust

Personally, I'd skip the cold blue; it won't match, will alter the color of the blued portions it touches, and doesn't last very long if the revolver sees much use.

Keep the finish clean and wiped down with a very lightly oiled rag and love it for what it is.
