Default Hogue S&W cylinder latch

I was looking on Hogue's website and noticed they have a replacement cylinder latch for $69. Is this a good idea or just an expensive do-dad? What is involved in doing the conversion?
Thank you

I think the answer is "it depands"

The Hogue cylinder latch I believe you are thinking of is a speed latch for PPC shooting and other competitive shooting games. The latch is positioned further back so you do not reach as far and has a large thumb engagement surface.

IF you are into revolver competition and the rules allow that modification then go for it.

IF you are thinking of using this on a carry gun or hunting gun, forget it.

As for installing it, it is removing the cylinder latch screw, put the new latch release in place and replacel the screw.

I have the Ed Brown design on my old pin gun. It did speed up reloads though I do not shoot pins any longer

Obviously this has no place on a pocket/purse gun, but it might be acceptable to some folks on a belt holstered duty gun

In my opinion, the Hogue is too big for anything but competition.

if you are a real competitor with a Revolver it might make sense, otherwise I would not install one. It could also actually hinder you on a CCW or Woods gun because of the larger & awkward profile. It is more apt to get caught on something, accidentally release the cylinder unintentionally, and just generally be obtrusive.

The S&W standard symmetrical shape is the one I prefer and am most comfortable with. Some like the more modern angled one which is also OK for CCW and target work too but the original shape is the best IMHO.

Still, it's a cool looking do-dad. One came on my revolver.
