I have searched and searched and can't find the information! I used to have either a detailed set of instructions or possibly a video of this process but can't find it anywhere.
What is the proper procedure for fitting the Yoke retention screw, aka lower right sideplate screw on a S&W K and J frame revolver. These would be 1950's vintage guns. Thanks, Mike
Detailed info on the new and old yoke retention system and fitting procedure is given in the shop manual written by Jerry Kuhnhausen. "S&W Revolvers, A Shop Manual".....p. 47-49. The book, including the new 5th edition, is available from Brownells, Midway, and Amazon, as well as other sources. (local library)
Both peening and shimming repair strategies are discussed in the book.
I know your feelings well ,I had to install a screw that was missing on my new "I"frame the lingth was too long and had to be cut down , The threads were too long and were binding on the Yoke shaft . Had to use a sharpie to mark the surfaces in the yoke and see what was being touched .Also had to make a bushing to hold the screw in the lathe chuck for a more stable grip . In and out of the lathe and gun many times until every thing fit properly. The last trial fit i used a fine stone to remove a a small amount of the threads. I had to use a "J" frame screw to make the "I" frame screw.
