So, I went to replace the springs on my [new to me] used 1066. I was watching a video on how to remove the extractor and the guy said punch the pin from the underside, as to not scratch the slide if the punch slips while going in from the top. No problem, except there was a problem.

Someone who had previously owned this firearm had beat on the extractor pin so much it had mushroomed out and even deformed the hole a bit on the underside of the slide. There was no way I was going to get it; my punch kept slipping off. So, I was forced to go in from the top and guess what happened...

Now I have a nice "high polish" line on an otherwise matte pistol.

The shiny area around the hole for the pin should have been a clue that someone messed with it. Like the ever-popular "bubba marks" around revolver screws...

By the way, this is the same 1066 where someone took a dremel to the chamber...

That darn Bubba Smiff gets around. 1066's are awesome pistols! Just hope it is still accurate after the Bubba Dremel "chamber/throating" incident. New barrels are not easy to come by now.

I'm going to test out the used one I got from Numrich. It looks to be in good condition

I got it for a few hundred dollars cheaper than other's I've seen on Gunbroker and Armslist

Ouch! A few layers of blue painter's tape are your friend when doing minor violence to a anything with a nice finish. I even stick some on the back of the recoil shield when removing a hammer from Smith revolvers so the hand doesn't ding it if I lose control of it.
Don't ask me how I know to do that. I actually do feel your pain.

Painter's tape and then electrical tape over that, because it's real easy to go right through the painter's tape.

Part of the attraction for me is servicing and repairing one of these old, negected or abused tanks. Still a lot of fun....as long as you can find the parts you need.

I have a colt 1911 series 70 that looked like it had never been fired. My nephew, a former marine armorer wanted to disassemble it one day, now it has an "idiot scratch" he made while putting it back together.....oh well, now she's a shooter....at least with the stainless you can probably cover it up.

Yes somewhat of a forgiving finish if approached cautiously..... If all else fails, strip it down and give it a media blasting and she should look like new. That;s my experience. anyway. I am certain others may disagree.
