Red face ? On Sear Fitting on Prewar Hammers

I have several prewar N frame hammers that appear to have never had a stirrup or sear installed on them. Some do not even have hammer noses on them. Stirrups and nose hammer installation is simple enough. My question is, how do you adjust the sear to engage the trigger. How do you open it up. On all "new" parts the sear lays flat against the hammer (without spring). Do you file the top of the sear to open up the radius or the back of the hammer. Or something else. Help!

We need to talk. In short though you do file the top part. The tip that engages the trigger also has to be shortened to give clearance. The simplest solution is to take one form another hammer. See if it works on the new hammer. If it does, file to match. Good luck. It's an art.

I had to replace a trigger in a 1917 Army. I bought 3 new sears from Numrich and had a bitch of time getting proper angle. I took a chance and order a complete trigger from EBAY and it fit perfect.

Talking Sear Fiting

Thanks Burt, I can do that. I'll take out a working sear and cut the new one exactly as the old one. That gives me a starting place. That will be a tricky maneuver, but no pain no gain! My second 5" Triple Lock project is progressing nicely and should be ready for Fords polishing before engraving by Christmas.
