686-3 fixed rear sight questions
While I would prefer a 681 fixed sight revolver over my 686, I think the easiest and cheapest thing to do would be to add an aftermarket fixed sight to my 686. I see on Cylinder and Slides website, they have sets and give the sizes (.250 & .300). I presume they are talking about the height of the front replacement sight? I only want to replace the rear sight. I am not interested in dovetailing a new front sight. Who offers a "drop in" rear fixed sight for my 686-3 4 inch?

Cylinder and slide sell them separate. I have one. You may have to file the front sight down.

I can say that my experience with the C&S fixed rear sights has been very good. But I had them installed while my revolver was in the hands of C&S for an action job. Cannot speak about the height of your sights, but there is a formula that allows you to figure out the correct height for the front sight to match up. If your front sight is the kind that is a solid part of the barrel, changing it will be a job for someone who knows what they are doing, unless it just needs careful filing to reduce that front sight in height. The C&S sight(s) are worth the money!
It's been a while, but they will talk with you about your specific situation, either by phone or by email. Might ring 'em up?

Another cheaper option is D&L Sports.

D&L’s fixed rear sight best fits the N frame. I tried one on my 2.5” 686 and it protruded too far rearward toward the hammer. FWIW, it fits fine on my 627 snubbie. I have no experience with C&S’s version.

If I am not mistaken, S&W did sell a version of the 586/686 with fixed sights. If memory serves I believe they are the M581/681 and should still be floating around. You might be able to trade into one and even pocket some cash.

I have both , a 681 (fixed sight ) and a 686 ( adjustable sight ) . I have found them both very accurate . Depending on a persons eyes , sight acquisition can take longer with the fixed sights . I wouldn't change out my 686 just yet . If you want fixed sights just buy a 581 / 681 and try the fixed sights . You may like it and then again, you may be glad you didn't alter your 686 . Regards, Paul
