Pre Model 10 Thumbpiece issues***PICS ADDED***
I have a pre 10 (C - 80xxx) that is missing the thumb piece and screw. Sounds simple....NOT! I tried one meant for a Combat Masterpiece. It wouldn't fit the slot. Then I found one that was advertised as being for a pre 10. It fit into the frame perfectly. But, it won't allow the cylinder to open or close and locks up the action. It does the same thing in a few other pre 10s I tried. As a control group, I switched thumbpieces between the other guns & the one w/ the missing part ..... no problem. So, why does my replacement fit and then freeze the action on each gun I tried?
The obvious answer is to return it and keep searching. How difficult would it be to alter it to fit?? What area on the thumbpiece would be the likely problem?
PICS:
The top thumbpiece is the one ,taken from another gun, that fits several of mine including the needy one. The lower is replacement that won't function.
Best
Charles

If the bolt is the older style with the square base, the "legs" on the bottom of the thumbpiece may not be quite long enough to leave enough gauge for the assembled parts to move fore and aft with the frame between them. In this particular assembly, the assembled thumbpiece stands approx. .110" off of the bolt when the nut is snug.

Thank you very much (as always!). I'll return this one and keep looking for the correct one. I was confused as to why the action would lock up when I installed the replacement thumbpiece. Once again, you explained it very well. THANKS!!
You don't happen to have the correct one , do you???
Best,
Charles

Sorry, I don't have the one you need. You might check at Numrichs or Jack First. I did see a couple on Ebay.
Probably best to talk to them over the phone though, so you can tell them exactly what you need.

Charles....looks like the new thumbpiece (bottom one) could be modified if the "feet" are tall enough. Does it go down into the frame slot? Looks like the feet on it are too wide. Did you do some measurements?
Can you insert it down in the slot and move the bolt forward without putting the nut on?
