I hope this is the correct forum for this.
I have been doing some research on Melonite lately, and came across this video. For those that are familiar with both applications I sure would like to see your opinions about this.
Melonite is awesome, BUT...and its a huge BUT...if the barrel isnt polished, shot, or cared for correctly...before its melonited....all the melonite does is ruin the barrel....because it locks in the flaws, hi pots, and any other issues forever.
My buddy shoots long range and target shooting of various sorts.
The people who do the melonite on his stainless match barrels recommend firing just a few rounds to break the barrel in then do as deep a cleaning as possible.
More then a few and the melonite won't "take" over any fouling left in.
Brent Turchi, Custom Shop and Customer Service Rep at Colt says that they've done extensive experiments with melonite and they found that it does NOT last as well as thought and is NOT as good as hard chrome.
He said that Colt wishes that there was a way to just treat a barrel and have it last as long as the more expensive hard chrome process but it isn't.
My match shooing buddy says he's getting a lot more life out of his stainless match barrels, so possibly it's good for match barrels but not so good on a standard barrel.
