Does a new hammer require Gunsmith fitting?
I would like to buy a new hammer for my M60 and bob it so it does not snag my pocket. I would keep the original as is.
Can I just get the hammer, cut it off, and will it just drop in and work??

hammer
most of the time the hammer will need minor fitting,but i have installed a lot of them that needed nothing .

Agreed. I have found the 10 or so I've replaced, its been about 50/50 for those that needed fitting and those that "dropped in". Worth a try. Even if it requires fitting, it shouldn't cost all that much to have a competent gunsmith pull it off.

What area usually needs fitting? Are we talking stoning edges?

On MIM parts usually they're a drop-in. On the forged hammers with pinned sears, usually the sear gets fitted and you can frequently just put the original sear on the new hammer and be good to go.

Aww, go ahead and just bob the origional. You know you want to and you could be done by dinner. You can always spend the $60-$110 and fit a replacement hammer if (ever) you decide to go back. Personally, I've bob'd both my 60 (no dash) and 360PD and will never go back. If it wern't for the lawyers, I'd bet S&W would sell them that way :-)

I took an angle grinder to my 360PD and was done in minutes. Turned out very well. I left a sharp edge for positive engagement, and also left the cut shiny which aids alignment.
Just mask off the gun so no metal dust gets in the works. I had a friend hold the grinder steady and I worked the hammer into it.

I bought a new hammer for my 396 and bobbed it. MIM tto MIM. still needed to adjust the double action sear.
I would never bob a hammer with it still in the gun. Yes, it is possible, but stuff happens and its so easy to remove the hammer.

I would also caution yo to not do it with the hammer in the gun. Take it out and do it right, one slip and you have an irreparable goof.
