Default stainless barrel coloring

Is it possible to blacken a shiny stainless barrel? I have a new Shillen match barrel in stainless I need to darken to match the rest of the rifle. I don't want to paint it.

Cerakote and Black T come immediately to mind.
I have had good experiences with both of these processes.

Taroman has it correct. The normal cold bluing solutions will sort of work but the result is not at all durable so rather quickly the barrel will look pretty bad. Now, the big question is the matter of the gas block, assuming it's an AR barrel. I don't know how thick Ceracoat is after it's fully cured but there may be a risk of not being able to get your gas block on the barrel if it's too thick.

BTW, I have a Shilen barrel on my 20 inch precision AR and when my eyes are cooperating I've managed consecutive 3 shot groups under 3/10 MOA.

It's not an AR so the gas block isn't an issue. It's on a Savage FP tactical rifle. The factory barrel and action is a black matte finish so the Ceracote option is sounding pretty good. Maybe the answer would be to do the entire rifle in Ceracote so it all matches.

Most type of "bluing or coloring" does not react the same on Stainless as it does on Carbon Steel. I have seen the "coating methods" used with better success and that is what is more common.

To me the whole allure of Stainless is that it is capable of being left in the raw and brought to an acceptable and durable finish by bead blasting, polishing, and/or left natural. Covering it or coating it to me is sort of counter productive - but that's just me.

Ferritic nitrocarburizing and similar finishes under different trade names such as Melonite and Tenifer.
