Starting work on one of those grungy LEO trade-in 640-1s.
Upon disassembly, I discovered that the rubber(?) mainspring swivel is half disintegrated.
Of course, it's out of stock everywhere.
I could make a brass replacement on my lathe in a few minutes.
So question is: Is there any reason that this has to be rubber?
Brass seems more better to me.
I know S&W calls it a Mainspring Swivel, but "Spring Seat" strikes me as more appropriate. No, they don't need to be plastic, the originals going back to the 1950s in Improved I-Frames and J-Frames were always steel. It was sometime in the 1990s they changed to the cheap **** plastic ones that don't last! This wasn't a good place to save a few cents per gun.
armorer951,
Thanks for the reminder and the link. I have been meaning to replace the plastic ones in a couple of guns and this reminded me. Just ordered 3 from Numrich.
