Was cleaning a friends M10 today and noticed the firing pin hammer spring was ineffective. It's an easy inexpensive fix but do you see that happen often? The firing pin is just flopping, no tension.
Did it break? Lose its coil strength?

The model 10 didn't have firing pin hammer springs, they all flop around.

Some models do, but I've forgotten. Someone will remember.

I think N frames and Magnums.

If you take the firing pin (hammer nose) out of the hammer you will see that the ends of the slot where the spring is has sharp corners. Over time these corners will eat through the delicate spring and make it break. If you replace the spring, round off or chamfer the corners on the back of the hammer nose slot and the new spring will last a very long time.

Thanks Toolguy. So in your opinion this Model 10T 4inch did have a spring at one time?

I know both my 686 no dash and 66-2 both have springs.

I'll will see if I can find a drawing. My local smith may know.

I don't know if it did or not. With the hammer nose off, you can easily see if there is a slot in the back for a spring. Sometimes you can see with the hammer nose on.

S*W Customer Service says spring started with dash 9.
I'm not familiar with these early models.

The parts book that I have from the Bangor Punta era (I could not find a printed date) shows a hammer nose spring only on the N frame models. All K frame models, regardless of caliber, show only the hammer nose and rivet.
