Default J frame stock finish??

I bought an extra set of old Bodyguard diamond center "high horn" stocks. I use them on a Mod 042, of all things. They are from the SN range 161,000.

Like some old stocks, they have lost their surface satin "shine", but the checkering is strong, no cracks, etc. I cleaned them with a little Murphy's Oil soap and warm water, using a toothbrush because even though this makes them a little duller, the stocks needed a good cleaning.

What did S&W used as a surface coating on their stocks in this era, and how best to apply it?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

The serial number falls between 1961 - 1962 and I believe they used some type of clear spray finish. I do not know exactly what it was or which brand (and doubt anyone else really would unless they worked in the Factory at that time). It seems to be a satin finish and would probably use a polyurethane to get as close as possible. I have found that some of the grips from that era did not hold on to their finishes too well and have seen a few examples of peeling. It might even be an early version of what eventually became a Urethane finish. They have vastly improved it a well.

If they were mine I'd use a spray applicable Polyurethane in a satin finish - you could try it on other wood first and see how it looks prior to using it on he grips.

Thank you for your reply.
I was also advised that a 50/50 mixture of turnpentine and boiled linseed oil would duplicate the original finish.

Another finish that looks good is Minwax Tung Oil finish. Much better than linseed oil and turpintine which never realy dries and gets tacky in hot humid weather. The tung oil finish looks good it has the proper satin finish to it , and dries hard to the touch.

That's not going to hold up very well to body sweat and moisture.
Get you a can of Minwax spray polyurethane in Satin finish and put about 3 light coats on them.

I've been told that Tru-Oil is the closest thing to the factory finish.
