Polishing MIM Hammer and Trigger
I have a 64-5 that I want to polish with Mothers Mag Polish. I've done it to other revolvers. But this one has a darker hammer and trigger, I'm assuming MIM. Still has firing pin on hammer. I think a high polish on the rest of the gun would make the darker trigger and hammer stand out even more. Would polishing them at least lighten them a bit?

I don't know but I'll probably try it on my 617.

I doubt that a hammer with firing pin on it is a MIM part. I believe that when S&W went to the frame mounted firing pin, the conversion to MIM was simultaneous. The trigger isn't likely to be a MIM part either.

So why is the metal so
Much darker? Is it forged? Either way, would is polish out?

According to SCSW the 64-5 built in 1997 only had the MIM trigger and the 64-6 had the MIM hammer installed. So check your serial number for a ship date and you'll know about the trigger and you do not have an MIM hammer in your gun.

My 686's triggers had a dark finish that looked like case hardening. I used a Lead-A-Way cloth to brighten them.

I'm not quite sure what the question is but...
The hammer mounted firing pin hammer is forged. A 64-5 could have either a forged or MIM trigger. S&W likes to use up parts on hand. If the trigger lever and hand spring are pinned the trigger is forged.
MIM parts are hard all the way thru unlike the case hardened forged parts. FWIW they also TIG weld nicely. I welded together a couple left over hammer spurs to see how they welded.
MIM parts polish nicely just like the forged parts. Bluing the MIM parts with Birchwood Casey cold blue (after polishing) leaves the MIM parts a near black (VERY dark blue) color.

I use mother mag polish on hammer and triggers of stainless guns. The stainless guns (686-, 617) are MIM dashed and had what your describing (color case) type rough finish. They polished up nicely.

Many thanks to the members of the forum for the tip on Mother's Mag polish on MIM triggers and hammers. My new 637 looks great now. Even put a little Aluminum spray on the Hilary hole. That's why these forums are so helpful.
