Default Hand assembly on a S&W 32-20 3rd change

Dear members:

Need assembly instructions for re-assembling the hand on a S&W 32-20 1905 third change. When I tried to remove the trigger off the pin, I lifted the hand a little too high and removed it from the spring. However, the only spring I can see is the so called hand lever which fits into the rebound slide. That lever, when moved up will clear the hole to insert the trigger on the trigger pin. I do not see any other spring that will provide tension to the hand as in other models. I have assembled other hands in different models but this one has me perplexed. Any advice will be welcomed.

Nick

I have the exact same problem on a 32 hand ejector. I did not see a spring pop out when I removed the hand. is it possible that the same spring used on that little dongle (?) inside the trigger is used for both?

armorer951, thanks for posting that picture! I was going to try and explain it, but THAT is a lot better

h-g, be careful and don't lose that tiny coil spring!

BTW, more modern triggers CAN be fitted to the older revolvers, if necessary. Back in the '70s I fitted a smooth .312" Ranger trigger into a 1912 vintage .32-20.

Default hand display

Hi Robert:

If you view the trigger, you will see a small vertical spring and atop of that spring is a lever that powers the spring. The end of that lever that pivots down into the back of the trigger is what gives the tension to the hand. That lever will be on top of the hand lever that fits in the rebound slide. Before you place the hand in the trigger, lift the back end of that lever, that rests on top of the small spring and lift it up. I would suggest placing the trigger, steel on steel, in a vice so you can left that lever up with a small screwdriver or pin punch and while you have that lever up, place the hand in the trigger. The hand will have a short and long peg on the inside of the hand. The lever sits between those to pegs. That is what powers the hand. Hope that helps you out. It took me awhile but then a light bulb went on and reasoned it out. Let me know if you have success.

Nick
