Default 3rd gen DAO slide on DA/SA frame......

I have the opportunity to buy a 6946 slide. I have a 6906.

Thought it would be fun to try out a DAO on tthe cheap.

Will this work?

It will work...
But not the way you hope it will.

First, the 6946 slide is longer than the 6906 slide and will overhang the rear of your 6906 frame by approx. 5/16 inch.

Second (and most importantly), it will NOT be DAO.
It will still be DA/SA except you will have no safety and no safe way to decock it.

Other than those two issues, no problem.

You're welcome!
The mechanism that determines whether your pistol is DAO or DA/SA is contained within the frame.
The round plug that replaces the safety on a DAO slide simply mimics the manual safety in the off-safe or ready-to-fire position.
