I know this has been beaten to desth but I have been out of touch with the sport for many years and there are a lot of new products out there...
Just wondering if there was any consensis as to the best lubes and oils out there for stainless steel or guns in general

i've used many in the past 10 years. I'm now using Slip2000 any am happy with it. I think any lube will do the job really.

The best? Dunno! Tri-Flow works for me.

I have been using M-Pro 7 oil for a couple of years. I understand the military uses it. Really good oil. Stopped using Rem-Oil. M-Pro 7 is a little thicker than Rem Oil.

You need to check it out.

Break Free CLP has been a staple for me. Great for cleaning the innards as well without having to disassemble the gun (mostly revolvers) if there's built up gunk.

This is what I use also. Very good.

I am pretty much talked out about this subject since it is so frequently asked, but since it appears you are a new poster I will chime in.

I personally mostly use Rig #2 Oil, Birchwood Casey Synthetic Gun Oil on some .22 slides, and rarely Rig +P Grease on rifle bolts and shotgun hinges. They have always performed perfectly for me and I have never had any rust issues.

If you ask 100 people the same question you will get 100 different answers. My advise is to go with a name brand product that has been time tested on the market for a long time. If a certain application requires a light oil, go with that, a heavier oil, then use one. If the manufacturer calls for Grease then use that. The MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE I can give you is use something, use it often, use it sparingly, and clean off the old dirty lube before adding new lube. Unless you are going to be in harsh environments like salt water, super humid climates or conditions almost any major brand will work just fine.

If you stick around here long enough I am sure you will wind up with a shelf full of different products and find the one or two that suites your fancy. Personally I'd stay away from the ones that claim super duper results and cost 5 times more because usually it's just something that is not needed and most of the time they perform no better than the plain jane ones do. Just use what-ever religiously and you will be just fine.

Remington is still hard to beat.

I quit buying lubricants bottled and labeled for firearm use years ago. I now use Mobil 1 Synthetic 5-W20 motor oil and high temperature synthetic wheel bearing grease on all my guns.

There is no consensus.

Just about anything will work just fine unless your gun is exposed to harsh conditions and hard use. That's not a consideration for most of us. I would recommend going with something non-toxic since there is no need to expose yourself to nasty chemicals unnecessarily.

I grew up using Hoppes #9 lubricating oil. It turns out that it's nothing it's nothing more than plain white mineral oil, so since I never any problems with it, I started using USP pharmaceutical grade mineral oil. It works well on knives and guns plus it is completely non-hazardous and very inexpensive.

I have used rem oil for yrs , I also keep Kroil for cleaning , " Safari Charlie " is something that gets a lot of use here .

Looking at the First Aid section on the MSDS/SDS information for Ballistol, I'm perplexed how it could be considered "non-toxic".

Have tried a lot of newer stuff, I seem to always end up back with good ole break free clp. Cleans, lubricates, and protects.

Mobil One for all my firearms and autos.

Militec-1. For long term storage rust protection, Birchwood Casey Sheath. Tuf-cloth to wipe down daily when carrying in summer. But, I always have a big bottle of ballistal in my gun cleaning box.

I've used it since the mid-1980's and see no reason to change, although I do use CLP on my AR's.

Back in my puppy dog days,
I used my Mothers sewing machine oil.
Worked fine until she found out.
Later, down in Biloxi I borrowed a girl's 22 rifle to go squirrel hunting.
I cleaned it with some old oil I found in my landlady's shed.
It jammed that rifle!
I think that was the last time I ever borrowed a gun.

Never had a bad oil. Pretty much any oil will work. Some are lighter than others, so need to be reapplied more often.

My way of saying, "There is no 'best.'

I am in the Mobil 1 crowd. After changing the oil in my car I let the "empty" containers drip into a jar. That becomes my gun oil. Yes I am a cheap critter.

The ATF/kerosene Ed's Red sub-component mix is great for a final bore clean and lube followed by a dry patch.

Put me down for RustePrufe for all exterior (finger contact surfaces) and Rem Oil for mechanisms. The former is kinda old-timey like myself but worth hunting for.

Three In One

I started to use Ballistol because of this Hickok45 cleaning video.

Now, if they could only do something about the "old sweat socks" odor........

I just bought some Royal Purple gun oil I'm trying out on my AR-15's.

As stated to me when I was young, any oil is better than no oil, when needing some. I have found a new cleaner and very light oil in it. Its called safari charley!

Different lubes for different guns IMO. I mainly use clp cuz I bought a big bottle of it & have no complaints. When I bought a Seecamp pistol EEZOX was so strongly recommended I bought some & like that too. Been meaning to buy some ballistol for the dual purpose of a lube & first aide item & making a batch of ed's red as well. Whichever you choose, use it sparingly, too much attracts lint/dust/sand & stains your shirts.

I've used 3-In-One my whole life. . .for everything. Rem Oil is good, especially in the spray can; but, it always comes back to 3-In-One.

3-in-1 Oil is what use for quick lubes and when I pull apart S&W revolvers to detail clean them. Never had any issues. I do like Kroil and Zep Stainless Steel Polish (sold at Loews) aerosol for cleaning.

I'm starting to use PermaTex White Lithium in the tube for other things. I'd be willing to bet that different oils occupy most of my gun cleaning cabinet. I have CLP, Wlson Ultima Lube, NicoMoly and others I long forgot about.

Bottom Line: At least you maintain your firearm and care enough about it to pick a good oil. I've seen many a gun used as a farm implement that it makes me ill.

I agree...Remoil is a little too thin for my tastes.

GunButter, Bought some from Midway for all the 5 star ratings. Works great for internal parts. Ballistol is good stuff too.

Same here. Good old 3-in-One oil, or Singer Sewing Machine Oil. And for a nice mist before a wipe-down, Rem-Oil aerosol Oh yeah, and Hoppes grease for sliding parts ( remember; oil what rotates and grease what slides)

I have never seen anything like Ballistol, it is in a class by itself, it is great. I also use kroil, mostly to wipe and lube the bores of all my guns.
