Default Model 66 cylinder in a model 10?

Both K frames, pinned barrels.I am thinking I would like the recessed cylinder look and "pinto effect"...plus I can "melt" it,something that I'd love to do one day on a 649...but that's another chapter. Anyways.. Not sure I would ever fire .357 rounds out of it,but I wonder if the frame/barrel could handle them, just in case..? I'd hate to make something "dangerous" for anyone in the future.
I picked the 10-5 snubby up the other day and had been thinking about the 66 cylinder swap for a while. There are lots of 66 cylinders out there cheap..but a bit banged up cosmetically.Melting it would take care of that.

Edit: I think I answered my own question: no. I have a 19 with a recessed cylinder and it's longer than the model 10s..so not going to work. But..I could put the 66 cylinder in the nickel 19...

Nor only is the 66 cylinder longer, but the diameter may be bigger too, I'd have to check. But since it's too long, the diameter doesn't matter.

Of course a lathe could address both issues.

I believe you are correct on both counts.

Additionally although the cylinder window in the frame is the same dimensions, the forcing cone of the M10 barrel protrudes further into the window to mate up with the shorter 38 spl cylinder.

So..I decided to use a 64 cylinder! Found one off of a 2" barrel model 64,with correct ejector rod, with yoke. I think it just might work..

With a little luck it very well might - hopefully without a lot of hand-fitting. Best of luck.

Default Beware!

While you can get lucky, even between two same model consecutive serial number S&W revolvers cylinders are not drop in parts.

Assuming you want to be able to continue using the original cylinder, if upon "dropping in" your random Model 64 cylinder you discover That:
1. The yoke barrel is too long for it then you shorten the yoke and put end space washers in the original cylinder.
2. The yoke barrel is to short--just use end shake washers in the random cylinder.
3. The barrel cylinder gap (B/C gap) is too big then you have the barrel set back a revolution to fit the random cylinder and shorten the front of the original cylinder in a lathe.
4. The B/C gap is too small then you shorten the random cylinder in a lathe.

It has been written here many times that if you use the original ratchet in the random cylinder then it is more likely to be in time and lock up tight. If you are gambling on that then at least be sure the random cylinder takes the same shape ejector star. I wish you lots of luck with timing.

By the way, even if a yoke appears to be from the same model and vintage the odds that it will fit your frame are small.

I have the T shirt.

I bought a target trigger and hammer as well.(for a model 15 combat masterpiece) I will assemble and if anything is off, take it to a S&W gunsmith I know. It should make a dandy "hot rodded" revolver.
