Here on some S&W dimensions with some not on that page. I took these because of another thread wishing for the near impossible K frame 44 mag.

Measured with digital calipers. May be off a .001 or so here and there. Did not spend all day at it. I do know that frames and cylinders vary a few thousands.

Here are some other interesting numbers on cylinders

J frame 357 chamber walls .046 (offset cuts) between .095

K frame 357 outside .75 (-.040 lock cut), between chambers .70

L frame 44 mag outside wall .045 (offset lock cut) between .122

N frame 45 colt outside wall .0625 (-.034 lock cut) between .055

N frame 44 mag outside wall .076 (-.034 lock cut) between .079

If a guy could get a 5 shot 45 colt cylinder (or a blank) it would be possible to have a 5 shot N frame 45 colt with cylinder walls considerably thicker than those of a model 69 44 mag (.02 thicker on outside wall and between chambers than model 69's outside wall) and have offset lock cuts and run real magnum pressures around 36,000 psi. The impulses to the frame would be no more than a 44 mag firing the same weight bullet. I can dream, but my 45 colts running around 20,00 psi are really all I need. Just an observation from these dimensions.

There are at least 2 cylinder lengths used on mod 57 or 58 revolvers. 1.740 and 1.710 I believe. Dean

I never measured cylinder lengths for this just frame openings which are fairly consistent for every frame model (the J frame magnum frame is an exception to this by about .1).

J frame cylinders 38 + 357 cylinders have different lengths as do K frame 38 and 357 with the 357 longer. Only have 44 S in L frame. N frame cylinders vary for several reasons. The recessed cylinders are appox .060 longer just for recesses. 45 acp shorter for clips. Thats the recoil shield end. The barrel end has differences to. The 357 and 45 acp, 44 special and early 45 colt(-3 and prior) ones are considerably shorter than the 41, 44 and later 45 colt cylinders. The barrel to cylinder gap on these is taken care of by a considerably longer barrel extension. But it on measures from the center of the extractor to the face of the gas rig on front of cylinder the length there is very similar on all except for minor fit adjustments. Plus lots of small changes in dimension differences over time and models. A early 44 mag recessed cylinder I used to make a recessed 45 colt cylinder was not only .06 longer to rear for recesses, but also about .04 longer to the front than the stock 45 colt cylinder and I had to trim the barrel extension to fit it.
