Gun Parts Corp. shows two different extractors for my pistol.

I need a S&W part number for this extractor:

GPC does show 2 extractors, the difference being one is blued and the other stainless. They should be otherwise identical. They are sold out on both.

GPC shows the extractor as for the 5900 series, which would work with the 39/3900 series too. Don't limit yourself to looking for a 5946 extractor exclusively!

Try some other sources, I would call Jack First first. Jack First Gun Parts

They are working on getting an on-line site up, but still in progress. Call them.

There are three part numbers for the extractor for your model number.....

OEM #10127, and a "revision 1" or "R1" number 10172. There is also an "S" (stainless steel) "R1" extractor listed as 23235.
Perhaps Numrich can advise what the OEM part number on their part is when you call them.

I believe any of these listed extractors will function in your pistol.....R1 parts would be preferrable if you can find them. Remember that the new extractor is not a "drop in" will need to be fit. Fitting involves special space gauges and a tension gauge.

Thanks for the info. Since I'm not the original owner, sending the pistol to S&W for repair would be quite expensive.

I don't have a space gauge nor a tension gauge. What does the space gauge measure? The vertical dimension of the extractor?

And here I thought it was just a matter of drifting out the pin and resetting it the new extractor.

Is a broken extractor common with S&W pistols? Not acceptable.

Broken extractors are not common, but mechanical things do fail....even in high quality well made mechanical devices. Usually due to an anomaly in the part itself, or misuse and/or abuse.

The gauges include a "go" and "no-go" gauge to measure rim clearance, and a gauge that measures distance between the extractor and the opposite wall of the cutaway in the breechface/slide for the cartridge rim. Fitting also requires checking and verifying the tension imparted by the extractor spring. This is done with a special push-pull force gauge.

I'm not sure what the costs would be to replace the extractor, but in my experience, fees charged by S&W for repairs are reasonable. You could call them and ask if they have the parts available, and if they will agree to work on it for you.

If not, you may be able to find a S&W pistol armorer with the proper parts, tools, and experience in your area who could assist. Companies like Cylinder and Slide and Novak still work on these pistols also, so you could also contact them for possible assistance if the factory is unwilling to provide support.

I phoned S&W today. They have the part but will not sell it to me. They want me to ship the whole gun to them for repair (not under warranty). The guy wouldn't even give me the part number.

I then phoned LSG Mfg (lsgmfg.com). Frank has the part but will not sell it to me saying there are dire consequences if the extractor is not properly fitted.
He charges $100 for the job and all I have to ship is the slide.

He'll test-fire the slide using his own frame, barrel, etc. You'd think the perfect test would be to use my entire gun.

Too bad the extractor is not a drop-in replacement.

I am surprised that a 5946 extractor replacement is so complicated. But I know nothing about such guns. I have replaced several dozen extractors on various pistols and rifles, and in some cases I have even made my own from scratch, the most interesting one being for a Japanese Nambu 8mm pistol. But none were all that difficult to install.

Considering what the other folks said about this not being a drop-in part, I think this is your best option. Price is reasonable and shipping will be cheap since you won't have to ship it overnight as shipping company's require for serial numbered firearms (upwards of $50). If you intend to buy insurance for shipping, tell them exactly what the part (slide) is and that it's not a serial numbered part. You may get a blank stare from the clerk and an attempt to ship it as a firearm. Just ask for a supervisor. Also, it may be better to take it to the shipping company's depot instead of their franchised lackey strip mall store. I tend to avoid all that Bolshevik by just not bothering to insure whatever I'm sending. I just tell 'em that it's a handtool of similar weight and size. It goes without saying you're gonna have to package it yourself. One other thing. Since it's not a firearm, you could simply mail it USPS.

Don't get too caught up in not having you entire firearm on hand. I don't think it's necessary for extractor installation.
