Got a great deal on a S&W model 58 because someone scratched their initials on the frame below the cylinder. I can live with it but if there is an easy inexpensive fix? That would be outstanding. If your unfamiliar with S&W model numbers like I am a S&W model 58 is a black/ blue revolver.

No easy fix. Depending on which side, where and how deep, it might be sanded off. But it takes skill do do it correctly and not make it look worse. Flat areas would need block sanded, curved areas with correct curved block backing sand paper. This avoids dishes and waves, dishes at screw holes, etc. If it is on emblem side it would "fade" emblem. Then when it was correctly sanded and buffed to an even smooth finish, it would need a new blue job. Having it done $$$$. More than gun is worth. You could sell and buy one nicer one for less and it would be worth more than a refinished gun.

With time and care it can be done in home work shop by some one with good metal skills, but the blue salts cost some money and even with something as small as a revolver, a good metal container a heat source and the salts are not body friendly especially when hot.

Cold blue is OK for touch up, but not large areas. No inexpensive way to fix it that won't leave it worse off than it is now.

I have no idea what possesses people to do things like this, but Steelslaver is spot on about 'fixing' it. Since it's already damaged, you might consider sending it out for refinishing to someone like Ford (no, not the car company!). I'm guessing but cost would probably range around $300, but you would have the option of changing the finish to something you might like better, such as nickel. Of course doing this will devalue the gun, but the previous owner has already done that for you.
