Lug Removal on a 686
Someone in the past posted some photos of a 686 from which he had removed the barrel under lug .If that person sees this I would like to know how he went about this as I have an extra 5 inch barrel I would like to treat as he did.

I ALMOST removed the under lug on my 586 6" a few times but never did. I think the major reason is I did NOT want to strip and re-blue the gun after I did the work.
Actually NOW I am glad I never did it because the extra weight helps with heavy 180 grain Magnum loads. I have enough variations of Smith Revolvers that I don't mind the lug now. Sort of reminds me of a Python.

If your extra barrel is really a 5", not a 4" or 6", I think it would be foolish to alter it, as they are hard to find.
But it's your barrel, so it's your choice.
PS: I did remove the lug from my 586 6", used all handtools, it was a long and tedious process, decreased the value of my gun, but I like it better. My revolver was a well used no dash shooter grade that I bought new right after they came out, so it had no real collector value, and I will never sell it.

Here's another suggestion. Might want to call the factory, get the part number for the barrel on SKU/Product code 164284, a Stocking Dealer partial lug M686 with 5 inch barrel, then ask if they have any in stock.... It's happened before, and with that, you might be able to simply have the barrel installed on your revolver...
Just a thought...
Good luck,
