quick question on sight replacement
I'm under the impression new S&W revolvers have pins in a receiver for the front sight, and are easy to pop out and replace with something different (say a patridge sight).
How is this done on older, pre-lock revolvers? They appear to be solid, one piece design.

Many older revolvers have a well-concealed retention pin for the front sight, finished and polished so that it is very difficult to see, much like the sideplate seam that new Forum members mistake for a frame crack .

Thank you Alan, that's good news. I just bought a 586-3 and am hoping this is the case as I want to replace a ramp with a patridge...

Some are an interval piece of the barrel. Others that are pinned don't necessarily just pop out. Changing a front sight can turn out to be a real chore.

As mentioned the older ones that are pinned are usually pretty tight, I've had to drive them out. The new sight was tight going in.
Proceed with caution.
