Default Model 36 No Double Action

I have offer to pick up a Model 36 ( 4 digit Serial number ) its in rough shape finish wise But my biggest concern is that it will not function in double action . Works perfectly well as single action and will advance the cylinder in single action . What could the problem be ? I looked at a diagram on and compared the operation with my early model 60
Is this a transfer bar issue ? or some other internal part that isnt working?
I just hate to pass up such a low numbered piece if this is a simple fix ANY IDEAS
Thanks in Advance

The more I look at the pictures ect It is a Flat Latch but on the right side it is also missing a screw at the 12 oclock position near the trigger another issue is after looking at NUMBRICH parts the only diagram they have is for the Model 36 J frame which does not indicate the missing screw I from the standard Catalog they did not begin using the J frame to later
This one has no model number only a serial number 28XX So that confuses me even more

Double action sear spring broken? Could be other things as well. You'd need to open it up and see. If you are selling face to face the seller should let you do an inspection.

Smith & Wesson's don't have "transfer bars." The DA sear may have a problem. The sear spring has already been mentioned. Someone may have removed the DA sear completely. Normally you only see that in K14's that were used as SA only. It was easier than buying a SA only kit. But someone may have done that. The screw missing may be the screw that holds in the bolt spring if I am reading your post correctly. If that is it then it may be more than just the screw missing. I've not worked on a "Baby chief" so was unaware of any J frames having that screw on the front of the trigger guard. Otherwise you might try to post a picture if you do indeed buy this revolver. Another thought is that if you buy it, take a pic with the sideplate off and we could be of more help.

Default Gunsmithing needed

Someone needs to go inside the gun to see what's worn out or missing.
